Is My Stone Chip Repairable?

Many stone chips can be repaired, particularly when they are caught early.

As a general guideline, damage approximately 1 inch in diameter or smaller (about the size of a quarter) is typically within the range of repairable damage. However, size is only one factor we consider.

The location, depth, type of damage and condition of the glass can all affect whether a repair is possible. Some damage may have limitations even when it falls within the typical repair size.

If you’re unsure whether your windshield can be repaired, our team can assess the damage and help determine the best option.

What Happens During a Stone Chip Repair?

During a professional chip repair, a specialized clear resin is injected into the damaged area of the windshield. The resin fills the damaged area and helps restore the structural integrity of the glass.

A successful repair is designed primarily to stabilize the damage and help prevent it from spreading.

It is important to understand that a repaired chip may not completely disappear. Depending on the type and severity of the damage, you may still see some discoloration, a small mark or slight distortion after the repair. That’s normal.

The goal of a chip repair isn’t necessarily to make the damage invisible, it’s to repair and stabilize the glass before the damage gets worse.

WhY REPAIR A Stone Chip?

A small chip can become a much larger problem. Temperature changes can cause the glass to expand and contract, while road vibration and everyday driving can put additional stress on an already damaged windshield.

Repairing damage as soon as possible can:

  • Help prevent the chip from spreading
  • Help preserve the existing windshield
  • Reduce the likelihood of requiring a full windshield replacement
  • Save time and money compared with a replacement
  • Help maintain the structural integrity of the windshield

The sooner you have a stone chip assessed, the better.

How do you repair stone chips?

We vacuum debris from the chip, inject a liquid resin, fill the pit and cure it with a specialised UV light. Once bonded, the resin strengthens the windshield. The final step is to polish and clean.

How long does it take?

Most chip repairs can be completed in 30 minutes or less and an appointment is not necessary. You can use our free shuttle service 6 days a week if you don’t have that long to wait.

How much does it cost?

Estimates are free. A single chip repair only costs $60. Each additional chip costs $25. Your insurance policy may even cover the cost of the repair.

Weather & Temperature Can Affect Your Repair

Windshield repairs require the right conditions for the best possible results. Temperature and weather can affect both the repair process and the amount of time it takes.

Hot Temperatures

When the glass is extremely hot, we may need to allow additional time for the windshield to cool before attempting the repair.

RAIN & SNOW

Moisture inside or around the damaged area can interfere with the repair process. Additional time may be required to allow the chip to dry completely.

EXTREME COLD

When temperatures are very cold, the glass may need time to warm closer to room temperature before a repair can be attempted.

These conditions can add time to your appointment, but they are important. Attempting a repair when conditions aren’t suitable can result in a poor repair outcome or, in some cases, cause the stone chip to crack during the repair attempt.

Our priority is to give your repair the best possible chance of success and not to rush the process.

Stone Chip Repair or Windshield Replacement?

Not every windshield needs to be replaced because of a stone chip.

When the damage is suitable for repair, repairing the existing windshield can be a convenient and cost-effective alternative to replacement. However, some damage cannot be safely or effectively repaired and may require a new windshield.

Factors such as the size, type, location and severity of the damage, along with the condition of the surrounding glass, all play a role in determining the best solution.

Our team can assess the damage and let you know whether repair or replacement is the appropriate option.
